Looking forward to longer days and warmer weather!
This month we have testing on Saturday, March 18th at 9am. Friends and family are invited to come and cheer on their favorite martial artists. We will have a 10am Make up/Family Class that day.
The week following testing is Buddy Week/Fun Week.
Then we dive into our Spring Curriculum which is focused on sparring and kickboxing.
A martial arts program is much more than teaching kicking and punching. It teaches important life skills such as goal setting. Our 3 month curriculum cycle and belt testing are an integral part of teaching goal setting. Every cycle is broken down so students learn new material, practice and perform that material, and earn a stripe. This process repeats until the student has earned a yellow, green, and blue stripe. Consistent attendance is important for being able to perform the material and students earn a red stripe for attending enough classes. Finally, the black stripe is earned for demonstrating all of the yellow, green, and blue stripe material to the instructors. Once a student has all five stripes, he/she is ready to test for a new belt. This 3 month journey includes very short term goals (earning a stripe every few weeks), to an intermediate term goal (testing for a new belt every 3 months). This process is repeated (with testings extending out every 6 months as the student matures) for years until the goal of Black Belt is achieved. At that point, new long term goals such as 2nd Degree Black Belt are set and broken down into short and intermediate goals again.
Belt promotions should not be seen as a “given”. Students must be able to perform the required material independently with precision, power, and focus. This can only be achieved with intentional practice in class and outside of class.
We have been using this formula to teach goal setting to students of all ages for over 30 years. While this is important to martial arts success (Black Belt and beyond), it translates to all areas of life. This is a life skill that we teach in our program every day.

After working hard for several months preparing for belt testing, we like to take a break and have a Buddy Week/Fun Week. Students can bring a friend to class (we just need each friend to fill out an intake form) and have a fun 45 minute class with all sorts of martial arts themed games. We are on a normal class schedule this week.
Our Lil’ Dragon, Kids, Teens, & Adults Taekwondo curriculum will be focused on Sparring & Kickboxing following our March 18th testing. We will be working on this curriculum until our belt testing on Saturday, June 17th.
All students will need white boxing gloves. Lil’ Dragons and all White, Yellow, & Orange belts will be only be working on the heavy bags and pad work and will not be sparring.
All Green Belts and higher ranks will be working on pads, heavy bags and sparring. They must have red foam dipped headgear, handgear, footgear, mouthguard, shin guards, elbow pads, protective cup for males. To increase our students’ safety while sparring, we are requiring two new pieces of gear, chest guard and face shield.
All gear can be ordered through this link https://sparkpages.io/?i=_ywT, through the Spark student app, or at the school.
We try to keep our prices comparable to online sites. We always appreciate our students choosing to buy from our local business over national retailers.
